The World Devourer

Since time inconceivable the space amoeba existed 
in the universe. It had swallowed stars, rubbed out 
worlds,had sucked-in whole civilizations. 
But also the amoeba was nearing death. The energy 
sources, which lay in its range, were exhausted. It 
was condemned to slowly cool down and finally 
to die.
But once more its will to live reared up. 
A moon approached it. With its innumerable eyes and 
sensors it could make out a tiny settlement on the 
surface of the heavenly body. An inscription on one 
of the buildings told it the name of the station: 
Moonbase Alpha.
